Measles Outbreak

The independent newspaper `The Inquirer' in Monrovia reported on Wednesday that measles had broken out in Nimba and Grand Kru counties in northeast and southeast Liberia respectively, PANA said. It said 10 children were dying each day in the Nimba town of Nyor-Diaplay and quoted the officer in charge of a clinic in Yorpea, also in Nimba, as saying that 20 children had died recently from measles in the area. The county's chief medical officer, Dr Sei Parwon, attributed the high number of deaths to a lack of disposable needles and other medical supplies. Measles has so far killed at least 10 children in Grand Kru, which borders on Maryland County, PANA said. Alarmed by the critical health situation in the countryside, the Health Ministry is collaborating with UNICEF and USAID to revitalise hospitals and health centres ruined during Liberia's civil war, PANA reported.
