Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels attacked government troops on Tuesday night at Kabala, in the north of Sierra Leone, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said.
The spokesman of the UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) said the closest the action got to Kenyan peacekeepers stationed in the area was about 800 metres. Eckhard said no casualties were reported and that Kabala was said to be quiet and tense on Wednesday.
Meanwhile the RUF has released four trucks, their drivers and rations which the rebels had detained as they were taking supplies to more than 200 UNAMSIL personnel surrounded in Kailahun, in the east. Eckhard said another 21 peacekeepers whom the RUF had moved from Kuiva, where they had been encircled, were reported to be in Pendembu, also in the east.
