Government denies rebel successes around Bentiu

Sudanese armed forces spokesman Lieutenant-General Mohammed Uthman Yasin said claims by the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) of military successes around the oil town of Bentiu, showed merely that the rebel movement was "depressed after failing to implement the agenda of states hostile to Sudan". The Khartoum newspaper 'Al-Ra'y al-Amm' on Saturday quoted the spokesman as saying that SPLA efforts to disrupt oil production
had totally failed. Last week an SPLA/SPLM press release said SPLA forces had achieved major successes around Bentui during the previous five weeks, killing hundreds of government troops and capturing large quantities of weapons and equipment.
