SA and Zimbabwe party leaders meet

South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has called on Britain to honour pledges to help fund compensation for white farmers whose land has been requisitioned by the government of Zimbabwe for the black majority.

Speaking after weekend talks in Johannesburg with members of Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party, ANC Secretary-General, Kgalema Mothlanthe, said if Britain tried to impose conditions on funding it would make an already difficult situation worse. His remarks followed the gazetting of legislation last week allowing the government of President Robert Mugabe to seize white-owned farms without compensation.

It was the rejection by a majority of voters in February of a constitutional proposal enabling such seizures which resulted in the farm invasions and subsection violence. London has offered a US $53m compensation package but on condition that it will not provide compensation for farms confiscated against their owners’ wishes.
