British paratroops were involved in a firefight with Revolutionary United Front (RUF) rebels on Wednesday which left three RUF dead, a Ministry of Defence news release said in London.
The soldiers, who were patrolling at the Lingi Lo road junction near Lungi International Airport, exchanged fire with a group of 40 rebels for 10 minutes. There were no British casualties, the statement said.
The incident occurred on the same day that RUF leader Foday Sankoh was arrested by the authorities in Freetown. At the request of the Sierra Leone police, a British military helicopter transported Sankoh to a safe location, the Defence Ministry said.
