Zimbabwe cabinet meets

President Robert Mugabe was greeted by chanting war veterans and members of his ruling ZANU-PF party on Tuesday as he arrived for a cabinet meeting expected to discuss an election time-table and the country’s land crisis. A government spokesman told IRIN the meeting was expected to last most of the day and possibly into the evening. He said the cabinet would also hear from a ministerial delegation which returned empty-handed last week after talks with Britain on funding for the country’s land reform programme. Britain said it was prepared to grant US $55 million to help the government buy white-owned land for resettlement on condition that the invasions of more than 600 white farms are brought to an end.
