Explosion at anti-government newspaper

    JOHANNESBURG

    A bomb exploded in central Harare on Saturday, a few metres from the offices of a the independent 'Daily News' which has been critical of President Robert Mugabe and his ruling ZANU-PF party.

    According to media reports, the blast occurred about 9.15 pm in Samora Machel Avenue, about four blocks from the Zimbabwe parliament. There were no reports of injuries from the explosion in the city centre.

    'Daily News' editor Geoff Nyarota said he had received death threats four days before the explosion. He said threats were contained in a letter he received last Wednesday from an unknown organisation called The Revival of African Conscience, which accused the paper of ridiculing Mugabe and writing
    negatively about the ongoing farm invasions led by liberation war veterans.

    The organisation said his paper was anti-government and a "propaganda tool" of capitalists bent on "re-colonising the country".
