An outbreak of cholera in the Luapula province in Zambia has already claimed 13 lives, leading the health ministry to place medical workers on cholera alert, media reports said.
At least eight districts in the province have been affected by the disease, and the reported cases have risen to 50 from 36 over two days, said the reports, adding that Lusaka, the capital, has recorded 17 cases from surrounding peri-urban areas and compounds.
The reports added that 819 cases of cholera have been treated throughout the country since the beginning of the rainy season last October.
