Opposition politician disqualified for polls

A member of the Malawi opposition has been disqualified from taking part in the October by-elections for faking educational requirements. According to media reports Kennedy Kaponda Banda of the Malawi Congress Party was barred from contesting in the central district of Ntchisi because he used somebody else's certificate and refused to take the English proficiency test. "The commission has not accepted his papers on that premise," Willie Kalonga, chief of the political programmes at the Independent Electoral Commission was quoted as saying.
