Electoral commission appeals election scrutiny

Malawi's electoral commission is appealing a High court order to allow opposition parties to scrutinise election materials for the 15 June presidential poll won by Bakili Muluzi, news reports said on Monday. The commission's lawyer, according to the reports, argued that the judge erred by ordering that the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) and its coalition partner the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) be given access to the election material, describing the order as "unnecessary" and "expensive" to execute. The MCP and AFORD presidential candidate, Gwanda Chakuamba lost to the United Democratic Front's (UDF) Muluzi, prompting the opposition's claim that the UDF rigged the elections.
