Ambassador apologises for deportations

The Zimbabwean ambassador to Mozambique, Grey Marongwe has apologised for the way in which hundreds of Mozambican immigrants were deported from Zimbabwe, news reports said on Monday. Marongwe apologised for the attitude shown by the Zimbabwean police and accepted that they were wrong to deport the group without observing the mechanisms agreed to between the two countries, especially the guarantee of consular assistance for the Mozambicans. He added that the police operation was not aimed at Mozambicans in particular, but at all those involved in criminal activity. The Mozambicans were accused of illegally panning for gold in a river in Zimbabwe's Midland province.
