Government plans to round up street kids

    JOHANNESBURG
    The Zambian government is to round up and send home an estimated 200,000 street children in Lusaka and on the Copperbelt. The Minister of Community Development and Social Services Dawson Lupunga said the children would be trained to become responsible adults, but gave no specific detail or timetable for the programme, news reports said. Critics have condemned the scheme for not tackling the root causes of street children or offering a permanent solution.
