Good governance conference

A conference on Good Governance and Sustainable Development in Africa will be held on 22-24 November in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, according to a news release issued by the conference secretariat. The meeting will focus on economic policies and the role of various actors in governance in Africa. It will also investigate issues such as legislative, judicial, financial and procurement systems as well as institutional capacities. The conference, organised by the West African Economic Association (WAEA), the Eastern and Southern African Economic Association (ESAEA) and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), is sponsored by key African institutions, international organisations and governments. It is expected to result in the establishment of an African Observatory on Governance that would monitor good governance procedures in Africa, produce reports on the state of integrity of African states and provide guidance on model regulations and moral codes on governance, according to the secretariat. More than 250 delegates are expected, including several African heads of state, civil society representatives, parliamentarians, members of the judiciary, government officials and bilateral and multilateral lenders.
