Former South African President Nelson Mandela was awarded an honorary law doctorate by the University of Gaborone in Botswana on Thursday, news reports said.
Mandela hailed Botswana as a model African democracy which had defied the pessimistic image so often associated with African nations. The country goes to the polls on Saturday to elect a new National Assembly for the next five years.
