Deputy minister quits party over “undemocratic practices”

Meanwhile, the South African daily, ‘Business Day’, reported on Monday that Namibia’s deputy minister for information and broadcasting, Ignatius Shixwameni had quit SWAPO because of “undemocratic practices” within SWAPO and the president’s “reluctance to act against corrupt leaders.”

The newspaper quoted a letter Shixwameni had written to Nujoma in which he said that the “corruption and lack of vision, back-biting and cannibalism” within SWAPO had “got out of hand.” He is the second high ranking official to leave the party in the past year. Namibia’s former high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ben Ulenga, resigned from the party in August last year to protest against Nujoma’s third term in office and his country’s military involvement in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
