Soldiers stage brief mutiny

Members of Niger’s armed forces staged a mutiny in the south-eastern town of Maradi on Monday to press for the payment of salary arrears, news organisations reported. Reuters and the BBC reported that soldiers roamed the streets of the town, Niger’s economic capital, firing shots into the air. AFP reported that they took a municipal official hostage for a few hours. The soldiers returned to their barracks later on Monday, according to the news organisations, which said negotiations had begun between the mutineers and the country’s authorities.
