Militant Islamic groups say they oppose a government decision to adopt the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
They expressed their opposition at a meeting on 23 August with military head of state Major Daouda Mallam Wanke, saying the convention ran against the teachings of Islam, Inter Press Service (IPS) reported.
Niger, a largely Muslim country, has adopted the accord with some reservations, especially on aspects related to inheritance, marriage and reproductive rights.
