Vietnam set for more landslides

Disaster experts in Vietnam are bracing themselves for further landslides as heavy rains continue. “With more rains expected, the likelihood of further landslides is strong,” Dang Van Tao, disaster risk reduction manager for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, told IRIN on 21 September.

“The north and central provinces are the most affected. Seven people were killed in Nghe An and Binh Thuan [provinces]. The region is also prone to mudflows and flash floods,” Bui Viet Hien, programme officer for disaster risk management for the UN Development Programme, explained.

Their comments came one day after the government warned that hundreds of homes and vast tracts of agricultural land in the Mekong Delta area are now at risk.

Since August, nine landslides in seven out of 35 provinces have been reported, Nguyen Hiep, an official of the Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control Department, said.
