Heavy gunfire was reported for the second day on the breakaway island of Anjouan which forms part of the Comoro archipelago in the Indian Ocean, media reports said on Monday. According to news reports gunfire was heard in the town of Mutsamudu most of Sunday, and began again in the early hours of Monday morning. Reuters quoted military observers who said that the latest gunfire was linked to arrests on Saturday of a group of anti-secessionist activists. The Comoros islands are situated between Madagascar and the East African coast. It declared itself independent from France in 1975. Secessionist on the island of Anjouan want the island to return to French rule, despite France's refusal to support their secession.
