Disaster alerts at the click of a mouse

Arlinda Cunah, 34, listens to her solar powered radio. As a disaster management volunteer it is her duty to pay attention to flood and cyclone warnings and to alert her community. Tomas de Mul/IRIN

The Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) is simplifying disaster monitoring and emergency preparedness through its email, SMS or fax alert service. Subscription is free.

The GDACS provides near real-time alerts about natural disasters around the world and tools to facilitate response coordination, including media monitoring and maps.

GDACS is a Joint Initiative of the UN and the European Commission.
