$1.25 - the new poverty line

Over the past three months an estimated 6 percent of Yemenis dropped below the poverty line as a result of price hikes. Mohammed al-Jabri/IRIN

Just in case you missed it, the new poverty line as drawn by the World Bank from August this year is $1.25 a day and not “a dollar a day” as has been the case since 1990.

The new poverty yardstick is based on improvements in internationally comparable price data, which offer a much more accurate picture of the cost of living in developing countries.
