In Restarting Political Dialogue, the International Crisis Group’s latest briefing on Burundi, the think-thank reports that “despite progress in implementing a peace agreement… Burundi is going through a dangerous political crisis.”
According to the ICG, the disarmament process has barely started, and no consensus has been reached on integrating former rebels into state and security institutions. These and other political challenges and concerns “could compromise the holding of free and fair elections in 2010 and the country’s future stability”.
