Nigeria’s House of Representatives has asked President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government to use, immediately, the US $10-million grant for HIV/AIDS made by President Bill Clinton, during his visit in August, to equip research laboratories on the disease in the country.
A report published by the Nigerian ‘Thisday’ newspaper on Sunday said the recommendation was part of the report of the House Committee on Health, following public hearings it conducted on claims by several Nigerians to have found drugs and vaccines that were effective against both the virus and the disease.
The daily said the report also called for “guidelines on procedures and mechanisms for scientific verification and evaluation to be made available to all concerned as a matter of urgency”.
