A bus headed for the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, collided with a truck on Tuesday in Uganda's mountainous Kabale Province near the Rwandan border, killing at least 30 passengers and wounding 20 others.
Rwandan Police Spokesman Theos Badege told IRIN on Wednesday that 18 of the injured had been evacuated by helicopter to hospitals in the Rwandan capital, Kigali.
"We have also brought back dead bodies to Kigali, the majority of whom are Rwandans," he said.
Twenty-six bodies airlifted to Kigali included those of Kenyans, Rwandans, Tanzanians and Ugandans. Six of these bodies have not yet been identified.
Tuesday's accident was the third bus and truck crash in Uganda in the past two years. In 2004, a bus and a fuel truck collided; causing an explosion that killed at least 40 people.
In May, the Ugandan government introduced new regulations limiting bus speeds and payloads.
