Humanitarian sources told IRIN 35 people had been killed and 220 wounded in Bissau. However the figures were likely to be higher, they said. News reports said shells landed on a hospital and the city’s central market yesterday, killing civilians, mainly women and children. According to a WFP spokesman, 97 people were holed up in the Brazilian embassy. They had asked for food, but the fighting prevented supplies from being taken there.
