Carter meets Abubukar

The former president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, met Nigerian head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar today, the last day of his visit, to discuss preparations for the elections and the promised return to civilian rule this year, news organisations reported. Carter, speaking after his meeting, said he believed the military leadership would ensure a successful transition to democracy, the BBC said.

Carter is visiting Nigeria on behalf of the Carter Center, which he set up after leaving the White House to promote democracy and human rights. It is one of a number of international organisations sending monitors to assess the elections.
