Liberia challenged US State Department spokesman James Rubin to provide proof that it is supporting rebels in Sierra Leone, independent Star Radio reported today. In a statement issued in Monrovia yesterday, the broadcaster said, the government said Rubin’s statement contradicted previous US positions on the issue. The US had previously pointed to aid coming from Liberian territory. Rubin’s assertion on Monday was the first by Washington directly naming the government of Liberia as a culprit. The European Union has also condemned Liberia’s role. Liberia sent a delegation of ranking officials to Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana in a diplomatic effort to end the war in Sierra Leone. The delegation is due to leave Ghana for Nigeria today.
