UNOMSIL mandate extended two more months

The United Nations Security Council extended the mandate of the UN Observer Mission for Sierra Leone (UNOMSIL) for another two months yesterday until 13 March 1999, the UN said yesterday at a news briefing. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan intends to reduce the number of UNOMSIL’s military observers and retain a small number in Conakry. They would return with civilian support staff under Special Representative Francis Okelo, when conditions permitted. The Council asked Annan to submit a report by 5 March with recommendations on the future deployment and mandate of UNOMSIL. The mission was sent to Sierra Leone in 1998 to disarm, demobilise and reintegrate the rebels into society.
