Government receives ADB loan for road upgrade

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Namibian government has signed a US $25 million loan with the African Development Bank (ADB) to finance the upgrade of the road from Aus to the growing desert mining town of Rosh Pinah in the south of the country.

    The upgrade of the road, which runs through Namibia's diamond and zinc mining belt, is expected to contribute to economic development and poverty alleviation through the reduction of the transportation cost of mining products, agricultural inputs and produce, an ADB statement said.

    Connecting the road to nearby South Africa would also help promote tourism and regional integration.

    The project would involve the upgrading of 169 km of gravel road with a bitumen surface and form part of the Namibian government's Public Sector Investment Programme.
