Nurses on strike

About 120 nurses embarked on strike action in Bindura, Masvingo and Mashonaland West on Monday, demanding better conditions.

'The Herald', the official newspaper, said the nurses reported for work but did not resume their normal duties, rendering only emergency services to maternity and theatre cases. The newspaper said the strike follows a deadlock last month between the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZNA).

The nurses reportedly want harmonisation of working conditions for those working in government institutions and those in council and mission hospitals. ZNA, said 'The Herald', argues that conditions in local authority and mission institutions are worse than those in the public service.
