Priest shot dead

An Italian priest, Carlo Masseroni, who was shot last Thursday at a close
range by suspected rebels, died in Nairobi to where he had been flown from
Bujumbura on Saturday. Army spokesman Longin Minani told IRIN that so far,
investigations had revealed that the priest - who was attacked alongside
two Burundian clergymen at Gatsinda parish in Mwumba commune, Ngozi
province - had given a cheque to the rebels which bounced. "So this time
they were looking for cash, but as he negotiated with them, they shot him
in the head," he said. "Our men [army] were nearby and heard the noise so
rushed to the scene and took the victim in a military helicopter to
Bujumbura where he was later flown to Nairobi for further treatment, but
latest reports say he died."
