Gold production losses

Zimbabwe’s gold mines are facing serious fuel and electricity shortages and a foreign currency crunch which is pushing up production costs and forcing the suspension of some operations, the London ‘Financial Times’ reported on Wednesday.

One of the first challenges facing a new cabinet to be appointed this week will be declining gold production and the closure of marginal mines, the newspaper said. On Tuesday, Falcon Gold Zimbabwe said it had suspended operations at its Venice mine due to “continued unsustainable losses”.
The same action could be necessary at Falcon’s Dalny and Golden Quarry mines. The three mines account for 4 percent of national gold production of 27 mt. In June, Australia’s Delta Gold suspended operations at its Eureka mine which opened only last December.
