Thousands of Zambians on Tuesday marched through the streets of the capital Lusaka in protest against last week’s fuel price increases, news reports said.
The price hikes, announced on Friday, raised petrol prices to US $1 a litre and US 85 cents for diesel. Filling stations implemented the new prices almost immediately after the announcement, forcing taxis and bus companies to put up their fares by between 25 and 30 percent.
The Zambian government said the increases were beyond its control because of the cost of imported crude oil.
