Zimbabwe will double its imports of electricity from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and pay for it in Zimbabwe rather than US dollars, media reports said on Friday.
The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation said the agreement - reached between executives from the two countries’ power authorities during a visit to Lubumbashi by President Robert Mugabe on Thursday - would save Zimbabwe US $1 million per month.
Zimbabwe supplements its electricity requirements with imports from South Africa, Mozambique and the DRC. Last month Mozambique said Zimbabwe had run up a US $35 million debt to Mozambique-Portuguese owned Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) for power imports accumulated over two years. Zimbabwe also owes the South African state electricity company ESKOM about US $20 million.
