Zimbabwe’s outgoing Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Emmerson Mnangagwa was on Tuesday elected the new speaker of parliament, media reports said.
Mnangagwa, who is a member of the political bureau of the ruling ZANU-PF party of President Robert Mugabe, lost his parliamentary seat in June’s elections. He was, however, appointed by Mugabe as one of 30 MPs that the constitution allows the president to select.
More than 5,000 people gathered at Parliament Building in Harare on Tuesday to witness the swearing-in ceremony of members of parliament.
