Zanu-PF has lost popularity - Mugabe

President Robert Mugabe has admitted that his ruling ZANU-PF party has lost popularity and said that the party is “virtually dead” in urban areas, the state-owned Ziana news agency said on Monday.

Ziana said Mugabe told the ZANU-PF central committee in Harare on Friday that last month’s parliamentary election showed a “major swing away from ZANU-PF by the electorate”. “We should admit that out victory was slimmed and soured by the loss of 58 seats, all in an electoral stroke. The 58 seats, 57 of which went to the Movement for Democratic Change, and one which went to ZANU would seem to indicate a major swing from the party signalling a significant protest against it. This amounted to a major political disaster that came our way as a party,” Mugabe was quoted as saying.

He said that it was clear that people had voted against ZANU-PF because of the adverse economic conditions and that the party should not be surprised that the bulk of people in urban areas had rejected ZANU-PF.
