Eritrea's Ambassador to Sudan, Abdella Adem, has left his post and fled to Europe, Eritrea's official Shaebia website reported on Friday.
It said the move comes two weeks after he was recalled to Asmara by the foreign ministry.
"Abdella told his colleagues in the Eritrean Embassy in Khartoum that he was driving to Eritrea but then boarded a plane to Europe," Shaebia said.
Informed sources told IRIN that Abdella was a long-serving member of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front (EPLF) and was one of the EPLF's elected leaders in 1977.
He had been serving in Sudan for nearly two years and was said to have sympathies with the group of 11 government dissidents currently detained by the Eritrean authorities.
