Restoration of the rule of law and resolving the country’s economic crisis will top the parliamentary agenda of Zimbabwe’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), party leader Morgan Tsvangirai said on Monday.
Addressing guests at a breakfast hosted by the South African newspaper ‘Business Day’, Tsvangirai said the MDC would also push for a permanent resolution to Zimbabwe’s land reform problems as well as the corruption gripping the country. He described President Robert Mugabe as a national liability and said that the country would not move forward while Mugabe remained in power.
He said the South African government should have kept an open mind over Zimbabwe’s June parliamentary elections, and should not have expressed support for any of the contesting parties. He warned that unless there was urgent international assistance to the country, the economy would not last more than six months: “We are facing an economic melt-down, without international support we do not believe the economy can grow.”
