The CFU’s move comes as a white farmer in the northern Karoi district was beaten unconscious on Tuesday by war veterans, ‘The Herald’ reported. Karoi, 205 km north of Harare, was reduced to a ghost town, as hundreds of workers were forced to return home after businesses there closed indefinitely to protest the continued occupation of commercial farms, the newspaper said.
Farmers in the area are demanding action to end farm violence, including the removal of the district police chief in Karoi who they accuse of fanning the trouble, news reports said.
Mugabe has described the farm occupations as justified in the face of unfair land ownership in which 4,000 white commercial farmers own the bulk of the country’s productive land with the majority of rural black Zimbabweans barely scraping a living in barren communal areas.
