The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) on Thursday challenged the results of at least 37 constituencies it lost to the ruling ZANU-PF in June parliamentary elections, the official ‘The Herald’ newspaper reported.
Among the results being challenged are the Gutu North constituency, which went to Vice-President Simon Muzenda; Buhera North, where MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai was beaten by the former Manicaland governor Kenneth Manyonda; Bindura constituency, which went to the new Minister of Youth and Gender Border Gezi; Chinhoyi, won by businessman Phillip Chiyangwa; Mazowe East, held by former information minister Chen Chimutengwende; Mazowe West, which went to the new Deputy Finance Minister Chris Kuruneri and Murehwa North, won by Victor Chitongo.
Other constituencies whose results are being questioned are Masvingo South, captured by former Minister-Without-Portfolio Eddison Zvobgo, and all five Gokwe constituencies - one of the areas that bore the brunt of electoral violence. MDC has also challenged the results from Buhera South constituency won by former agriculture minister Kumbirai Kangai and Marondera East captured by former security minister Sydney Sekeramayi.
In most of the petitions, the party cited alleged procedural irregularities and pre-election violence and intimidation, which it said had an impact on voting, ‘The Herald’ reported. The High Court can order a re-election.
