The OAU has asked donor countries for $1.3 to finance its implementation of the Ethiopia-Eritrea peace accord, according to AFP. OAU delegates met representatives of the European Union, US, Canada, Russia, Japan and China on Friday to update them on its role in implementing last month’s ceasefire, the report said. The OAU also appealed for money to finance equipment and logistical materials for peace-supporting operations over the next 12 months. Diplomatic sources cited said the OAU Secretary-General, Salim Ahmed Salim, had on Friday been authorised by the organisation’s central council for conflict management to deploy military and civilian personnel as needed to reinforce the peace process.
