Rebels ready to observe conditional cessation of hostilities

    NAIROBI
    The rebel Conseil national pour la defense de la democratie-Forces de defense pour la democratie (CNDD-FDD) has announced it is ready to observe a cessation of hostilities as soon as President Pierre Buyoya “respects international humanitarian law” by closing the regroupment camps, freeing political prisoners and agreeing to direct talks leading to a ceasefire. In a statement, received by IRIN on Wednesday, CNDD-FDD criticised the fact that camps in other parts of the country had still not been dismantled, nor political prisoners released.
