Meanwhile, war veterans and ruling ZANU-PF supporters on Thursday released 18 white farmers held hostage overnight, Tim Henwood, president of the Commercial Farmers’ Union told IRIN.
The farmers were held after responding to a call for help from a neighbour at a farm near the capital, Harare. “We went there and tried to smooth things,” Henwood said. “It seems there was a misunderstanding. They thought the farmers had come to attack them.”
In a separate incident, news reports said a dozen veterans carrying automatic weapons had stormed a white-owned farm at Norton, 40 km from Harare, where they allegedly threatened staff for talking to journalists about the land crisis.
