Court nullifies elections of opposition leaders

The Malawi High court on Monday nullified Sunday’s simultaneous elections of different leaders by two rival factions within the opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), news reports said. Justice Dunstain Mwaungulu ruled that the results of the elections be withheld until the court has decided which of the groups was the “legitimate camp” of the divided party. However, MCP president Gwanda Chakuamba’s faction announced earlier that he was elected leader of the party at an extraordinary convention held in Blantyre. He received 476 votes to 15 for his deputy, John Tembo. The Tembo faction, which held its own convention in Lilongwe, announced that Tembo was elected leader of the MCP with 439 votes to Chakuamba’s nine.
