Church group seeks US $447,445 for relief work

Action by Churches Together (ACT) says it still needs another US $447,445 for relief and rehabilitation work in Burundi after launching an appeal in October for donor funds.

"We strongly urged donors to consider the appeal," the agency said, in a message, from Geneva on 21 Nov.

ACT reported it had only received $83,604 in pledges and contributions since its last appeal on 22 Oct. for $531,048. The money is needed to distribute non-food items, seeds and tools; to support small-scale livestock programmes, the rehabilitation and refurbishment of the Matana School in the southern province of Bururi, and the training of people involved in these projects.

The new closing date for the appeal is now 31 Jan. The appeal implementation period has been shortened from six to four months - and correspondingly from $609,897 to $531,048 - so that plans can be made for a new appeal at the beginning of 2002, in time for the new agricultural season. This, ACT reported, would provide continuation of activities of the current season.

ACT is a network of churches worldwide based with the World Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation in Switzerland.
