Mineworkers strike

About 20,000 Zimbabwean gold and nickel miners went on strike on Monday over a pay dispute, news reports said.
Among the mines affected by the strike are two of the biggest gold producers, Freda-Rebecca, owned by Ashanti of Ghana and RTZ-owned Renco. Anglo American’s biggest nickel mine, Shangani and RTZ’s nickel processing plant Empress were also hit by the strike. The action was declared illegal by the government and the Chamber of Mines.

Doug Verden of the Chamber of Mines said: “The strike is totally illegal as the workers body, the National Union of Mineworkers, did not follow established procedures.”
