Two names have been put forward for the transitional presidency, the private Netpress news agency reported on Tuesday. It said the G7 group of pro-Hutu parties had named Domitien Ndayizeye of the [external wing] of FRODEBU as its candidate. Jean-Baptiste Bagaza of the radical Tutsi PARENA party “has also applied to lead the transition”, the news agency said. It reported that CNDD leader Leonard Nyangoma, a member of the G7, had favoured President Pierre Buyoya to lead the transition “but failed to convince his G7 colleagues”. Buyoya has yet to officially declare his candidacy. Meanwhile, the peace process mediator Nelson Mandela, is reported to have invited 24 heads of state to witness the signing of the peace accord on 28 August, news organisations said.
