A peaceful protest march organised by the pro-Tutsi party PARENA which was to take place on Saturday was “nipped in the bud” by security forces, Burundi news agency Net Press reported. According to Net Press, gendarmes surrounded PARENA party offices and the homes of nearly all the party cadres early that morning. “Large numbers of other gendarmes, heavily equipped with anti-riot gear (shields and tear gas) were deployed around the centre of town,” Net Press said. It quoted PARENA party spokesman, Zenon Nimubona as saying that 10 people associated with the party were intercepted and incarcerated in the special investigation bureau (BSR). Six of them were released on the same afternoon while the other four were released on Sunday mid day.
