A human rights group has alleged that 898 people have been affected by political violence since June, in incidents perpetrated mainly by ZANU-PF youths and war veterans.
The ‘Daily Independent’ on Thursday quoted a report by Amani Trust which claimed that five people died from beatings, 232 were assaulted with weapons, or were burnt shot and strangled between 26 June and 3 August. Amani Trust said a further eight people were raped, 125 displaced, 192 threatened with death or assault, while 18 people were abducted.
“Accounts of assaults, property damage, death and assault threats have all increased in the last week,” the newspaper quoted the report as saying. Amani Trust said most of the victims were suspected members of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change, and also included farm labourers.
