French President Jacques Chirac has hailed the Somali peace conference in Arta, Djibouti, saying President Ismail Omar Guelleh’s efforts to bring peace to Djibouti’s southern neighbour were to be commended. In remarks carried by the Somali newspaper ‘Ayaamaha’ at the weekend, Chirac was quoted as saying: “Powerful nations had failed to address Somalia’s problems but Djibouti succeeded.” At the talks in Arta, Djibouti, the new Transitional National Assembly at the weekend elected a new parliamentary speaker. Later in the week, conference officials told IRIN, the assembly is scheduled to elect a new president of Somalia. [See separate IRIN report: SOMALIA: New parliamentary speaker elected]
